Kieran Maguire: West Ham could be in line for ‘amazing’ £40m windfall

West Ham could rake in more than £40million from the Europa League next season – and now is the “perfect” time for the owners time to reinvest that cash.

That is according to finance expert and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after West Ham confirmed their place in the competition.

A 3-0 victory over Southampton on the final day of the campaign secured a 6th-place finish and their best points total, 65, in the Premier League era.

The Hammers posted a £65.3m loss for the last financial year and the extra revenue stream will be cherished by the owners.

Maguire warned West Ham to get their ticket pricing structure right but otherwise was optimistic about the boost European football will provide to the club.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “I think it’s a perfect opportunity for them to invest. There’s no doubt the owners want to progress the club.

“There is a potential £30-40m coming in from the Europa League. If they do well, that can be scaled up.

“They’ve got to get the ticket pricing right when it comes to the group games. We know that they are an amazingly well-supported club.

“Once they get into the knockout phase, they have the opportunity to sell 62,000 tickets. That is going to be hugely beneficial to the club.”

West Ham will enter next season’s tournament at the group stage.

The 2021-22 Europa League will feature just 32 teams rather than the previous 48 as a Uefa restructuring comes into play.
