Moyes sets sights on international box-to-box star as West Ham colossus bid looks doomed – report
West Ham boss David Moyes has set his sights on Hibernian midfielder John McGinn after a deal for Sevilla midfielder Steven Nzonzi became unlikely, according to a report.
The Sun claim that West Ham’s bid to bring colossus Nzonzi, who stands at 6ft 5in, to the London Stadium looks doomed after Sevilla manager Eduardo Berizzo was sacked in the week.
The La Liga club are said to have put a hold on any transfers after the sacking, waiting for a new boss to take charge before deciding on any moves.
Moyes is therefore reported to have turned his attention to Scotland international McGinn, who has impressed with his box-to-box displays for Edinburgh club Hibernian in the Premiership this season.
The Hammers boss is said to be a massive fan of 23-year-old McGinn, who could cost the club around £4million in the January window.
West Ham are lacking in central midfield at the moment with captain Mark Noble injured, and Moyes is said to be keen to strengthen in that area next month.
McGinn, who has five caps for Scotland, has been a mainstay for Hibs for the last three seasons, and has shone since their promotion to the top-flight this term.
Football Insider verdict:
To go from Nzonzi to McGinn may feel like a step down for Hammers fans, but there are several positives to take from this. Nzonzi would cost the club a lot of money, with the fee being touted at the moment standing at £30million. He is highly-coveted elsewhere, and any efforts expended to sign him may be in vain. McGinn on the other hand would cost a relatively minuscule £4million, and may end up being a very wise investment indeed. The young Scot has been quietly impressive for Hibs this season, and has been tipped to make it at a higher level. While he may not be able to make an instant impact, once he does get going he could become a star for West Ham, and at such a bargain price.
