West Ham told to axe ‘pathetic’ duo from line-up – ‘they can’t run’, says expert

West Ham United duo Konstantinos Mavropanos and Kurt Zouma have been “pathetic” in recent fixtures.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie slammed the pair and insisted Angelo Ogbonna should return to the starting line-up.

The Hammers have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league since early January, with both Mavropanos and Zouma starting in their recent 2-2 draw against Burnley on Sunday (10 March).

Much criticism from pundits and fans alike has been levelled at David Moyes’ backline amid a turbulent season in Stratford.

Mavropanos has earned consistent minutes after a slow start to his debut season with the club, while captain Zouma has been a mainstay.

McAvennie was gobsmacked by the centre-back duo and was adamant that West Ham would always concede when they play together.

“That defence – oh my God,” he told Football Insider.

“Mavropanos gives gifts away every week – and Zouma.

“Those two at the back are not proper players sometimes and West Ham will concede goals when they play.

“I’m not confident of getting a clean sheet, they’re pathetic, dreadful, sometimes.

“You need to have a solid back four if you have these attacking players.

“I like Coufal, I always have.

“But those two boys in the middle, surely Ogbonna is better than them?

“What’s happened to him? Mavropanos and Zouma look like they can’t run.”
