West Ham told to complete ‘crucial’ signing as Thilo Kehrer bid tabled – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted West Ham should move for a long-term partner for Kurt Zouma despite already signing Nayef Aguerd this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Irons will be “worried” about their injury crisis as their Europa Conference League campaign begins next week.

According to Sky Sports (9 August), West Ham have made an offer to sign Paris Saint-Germain defender Kehrer – and are waiting to hear a response from the French champions.

West Ham lined up with just one fit centre-back, Kurt Zouma, as Man City beat the Irons 2-0 on Sunday (7 August) at the London Stadium.

According to The Guardian (8 August), Issa Diop has asked to leave the club as Fulham inch closer to completing a £15million deal for his services.

Aguerd, Craig Dawson, and Angelo Ogbonna are all unavailable through injury.

Whelan urged the Irons to make a “crucial” addition very soon as the games start coming thick and fast.

“You’ve got to give yourselves a chance,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“This is where the window is going to be very important. The first game of the season has come and gone, and they’ll now know exactly where they need to strengthen.

“You can’t be going through these games with just Kurt Zouma. Yes, the Man City game is almost a write-off, but they’ll be worried going into these upcoming games now.

“They need a natural centre-half and someone who can come in and partner Zouma. There’s an opportunity to grow something there.

“It’s very difficult for Moyes to try and do that when he has to play players out of position.

Centre-back is a crucial area to address between now and the end of the window.”
