West Ham told to hijack £30m Newcastle Ivan Toney swoop – expert

Frank McAvennie has insisted Newcastle target Ivan Toney would be a “great signing” but would cost in excess of £30million.

The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, urged the Irons to hijack any potential move for the Brentford 26-year-old.

This site revealed this week (20 April) that the Bees will demand at least £30million for Toney this summer amid growing interest.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Newcastle and Brighton are among the clubs keeping close tabs on the striker.

The former Toon hitman has scored 12 goals in 28 Premier League appearances this term.

When asked if Toney could be an ideal target for Newcastle this summer, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild: “I think he could be – I like the boy.

“But I think he’d cost more than £30million.

“If I was West Ham, I’d go for him – because they need a striker to complement Antonio. He’d be ideal.

“He’s banging them in left, right, and centre – and he’s a team player as well, he works his socks off.

“There’s no minus to this boy. He scores goals, and he does the things that no-one notices.

“Newcastle are the ones with the money. If they get him, he’d be a great signing – they need that focal point.”

Toney is contracted at Brentford until 2025.

The striker failed to score in just four senior appearances during his previous spell at St James’ Park.
