West Ham transfer news: Pundit excited by ‘shock’ Dejan Lovren update
Paddy Kenny has no problem with West Ham potentially signing Dejan Lovren in the coming weeks.
The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the defender can still do a job in the Premier League.
According to the reputable Claret and Hugh (8 March), West Ham are interested in signing Zenit St Petersburg star Lovren.
They claim to have been told by a source the club are keeping a “close eye” on the former Liverpool star’s situation.
This comes as The Athletic reported (7 March) that all foreign players currently playing in Russia are set to be allowed to find new clubs following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kenny claims Lovren would only be a squad player if he does move to the London Stadium.
“You need squad players and that’s what a signing Lovren would be,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“You need squad players at this level and I’m sure he wouldn’t cost any money, not much at all.
“He will come in and do a job until the end of the season, the Russian league isn’t the worst so he would be fit.
“I have no problem with West Ham making the most of an opportunity like this.
“It would be a shock, wouldn’t it? Just in the middle of March having a new signing come in.
“I think it makes a lot of sense to be honest, they need a bit of backup in the defence.”

Lovren joined Zenit after leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2019/20 season.
He has so far won the Russian Premier League and made 47 appearances for the club.
