Whelan ‘amazed’ by what he’s heard about Gelhardt from Bamford at Leeds
Noel Whelan has insisted “everyone” at Leeds United is excited about Joe Gelhardt after a dazzling Elland Road debut.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 19-year-old for coming into the side with “absolutely no fear”.
Having come off the bench, Gelhardt won Leeds the penalty that secured a 1-1 draw against Wolves last week.
Speaking on the Official Leeds United Podcast on Wednesday (October 27th), Whites striker Patrick Bamford compared the “very good” youngster to a “little Wayne Rooney”.
Gelhardt played 27 minutes against Wolves in his home debut for the Yorkshire club, the week after playing 13 minutes off the bench away at Southampton.
Whelan hailed the youngster for bringing struggling Leeds United to “life” in last weekend’s clash.
“He was amazing against Wolves,” he told Football Insider.
“He came in with absolutely no fear, he was the one player who was direct and trying to make something happen.
“Gelhardt brought the team to life with his eagerness to really hurt Wolves, who were really hard to break down – and we really needed that bit of magic.
“It was a lovely run, great control, and he took on about three of them.
“When you’re that direct you can make something out of nothing.
“I think everyone was excited with what they saw from him – he really inspired us to grab that point.”

Leeds United signed Gelhardt from Wigan Athletic last summer.
He has scored six goals in seven games in Premier League 2 this term.
