Whelan backs Alioski to sign new Leeds deal after source reveals generous offer

Noel Whelan has backed Ezgjan Alioski to sign Leeds United’s latest contract offer but only if he is willing to be a squad player moving forward.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites striker claimed the 29-year-old would only be a bit-part player at Elland Road next season if the club are successful in their pursuit of a recognised left-back.

Alioski‘s current agreement with Leeds expires at the end of this month.

As revealed by Football Insider on 4 June, the Yorkshire club have submitted new and improved contract terms to the North Macedonia after he snubbed their previous offer.

Whelan suggested Alioski was deserving of an improved offer in light of his performances in 2021.

“I would certainly not be disappointed if he signed a new deal, it would be big for Leeds,” he told Football Insider.

“We still need to sign a left-back, there’s no doubt about that and I am sure he still would.

“Would Alioski be happy to provide cover? I cannot see him playing every game or even the majority of games next season. If a natural left-sided full-back is signed he then becomes the first choice next season. You wouldn’t want to move Stuart Dallas out of the midfield area though so you would say Alioski is second choice at left-back.

“In fairness to him he probably does deserve a better contract on the table given some of his performances in the second half of the season.

“The big question remains though, does he want to sign a new deal if he knows he will not be a regular starter? There will be even more competition at Leeds next year.

“He seems like a good personality to have around though. He has sat on the bench before and never seems to kick off a fuss.”
