Whelan can’t believe ‘amazing’ Meslier decision taken by Bielsa at Leeds

Noel Whelan can’t believe Illan Meslier has been axed for Kiko Casilla ahead of the Leeds United finale against West Brom.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted it was “unfair” the 21-year-old would not feature for the final game of the season.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Bielsa confirmed Casilla would play on Sunday after being handed a surprise start against Southampton.

Tuesday’s win on the south coast was only the Spaniard’s second league start of the campaign.

Sunday will see Elland Road welcome fans back for the first time this season.

As such, Whelan suggested Meslier should be given the chance to play in front of the supporters.

Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “That was the one particular change I was a little bit confused about, to be perfectly honest.

“It feels slightly unfair on Meslier because he should be playing in front of the fans on Sunday. Them showing their appreciation for what a great season he’s had with Leeds.

“They’ve got a clean sheet record, amazing saves at Sheffield United that he’s made, he’s been amazing since breaking through.

“I think it would have been nice. A fitting end to the season for him to have that cameo but it’s not to be.”

Meslier has played 35 times in the league for Leeds this season, with 11 clean sheets under his belt.

Meanwhile, Casilla is in line to make only his fifth appearance of the campaign.

The Spaniard has a total of 61 games under his belt for the Whites to date.

In other news, Leeds United are braced for “huge” offers for 2020 signing.
