Whelan: I did ‘fear the worst’ after latest Raphinha news from Leeds
Noel Whelan has admitted he “feared the worst” for Raphinha and Leeds United ahead of this weekend’s visit to Norwich City.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it was “great news” to hear the 24-year-old has recovered from his injury scare.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Bielsa confirmed Raphinha would likely be available for Sunday’s game after his recent layoff.
The Brazilian winger limped off against Wolves after a challenge from Romain Saiss.
He left Elland Road on crutches and missed the League Cup defeat to Arsenal.
However, he could return to the starting XI for Leeds’ trip to Carrow Road.
Whelan admitted he feared being without the Brazil international against the Canaries.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He didn’t look good and I think that was everyone’s worst fear, wasn’t it?
“Last week, before Gelhardt came on with that bit of brilliance, he was the one that looked like he was going to make things happen. That normal Raphinha style.
“He took all the weight on his shoulders. He looked like the one that was really pushing the game and pushing Leeds. Raphinha was everywhere at times, he really was.
“He was putting that much work in. You could see that he was taking that leadership all on his shoulders to try get a result for Leeds.
“When he went off, it was kind of like: ‘Oh no.’ You think the worst, you did fear the worst because he’s such an important player to Leeds. Not just offensively but defensively as well with the work rate he puts in.
“It’s great news, put it that way. Great news, we need the strongest, fitness squad possible away to Norwich.

“They know what a big game this is regarding their consolidation in the Premier League as well. It does become the magnitude of the game that is an important one.
“You can’t lose it but if you win, it’s a massive three points.”
