Whelan hits out at Liverpool after what he’s just seen – ‘they’re miles away’
Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool could be “too far away” in the title race if they cannot claim a result against Arsenal or Man City in the next week.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds must recover before the World Cup in order to “bridge the gap” to the Premier League frontrunners.
Liverpool face Arsenal on Sunday (9 October) before taking on reigning champions Man City next week (16 October).
The Reds have picked up just 10 points from their opening seven Premier League games and sit ninth in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are already 11 points behind Sunday’s opponents after drawing four games in the new campaign.
Whelan insisted Liverpool must now go on a winning run or face missing out on another Premier League crown.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s been very stop-start for Liverpool and they need to find consistency.
“They haven’t been aggressive enough, and we haven’t seen that free-flowing football which can really hurt teams.
“After a good win against Rangers, the challenge now is backing that up with a good result against an Arsenal side who are flying right now.
“It’ll be interesting to see where the teams are at, but they’ve got to start putting a run together or they’ll find themselves miles away.

“Arsenal and Man City are edging away, and if they can’t take points away from them – Liverpool could be too far away to get involved by the time the World Cup comes around.
“They’ve got to bridge that gap in these next two games.”
