Whelan issues ‘big’ Leeds claim after Kieran Maguire’s £13.3m reveal
Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United will use any new TV money and investment to secure new signings and towards the expansion of Elland Road.
The former Leeds striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, welcomed the prospect of additional funds after the Premier League announced a new broadcast deal in the USA.
The Athletic (18th November) claim the new six-year deal is worth over £2billion.
Finance expert Kieran Maguire has told Football Insider the new agreement is worth £13.3million-plus each to Premier League clubs.
The payout will depend on where each side finish in the table, with the winners getting £28.4million.
Leeds already have financial backing from the United States.
The San Francisco 49ers increased their investment stake to 44 per cent earlier this month.
Whelan suggested the increased revenue would go towards strengthening the squad, as well as the club’s stadium expansion plans.
“It’s more revenue coming into the club,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“We’ve got big ideas and big plans for developing the stadium. Bringing other players in to strengthen the squad to help us push up the Premier League.
“Any investment you’ve got to be happy with. Whether it’s coming from United States or anywhere else. It’s just positives again for the Premier League.
“It’s how big it is on the world stage in football that people want to invest in the Premier League. That’s why it’s the best league in the world.
“That’s why it’s the hardest and toughest league in the world. It’s why we generate getting some of the best players in the world.

“It’s because of all this investment. The 49ers’ investment is in a club that they see going a long way. Growth again in a club that has a terrific, tremendous fan base already.
“They’re looking to extend and expand Elland Road to 55-60,000 capacity. They will definitely fill it once that development is done.”
