Whelan lambasts ‘shambolic’ Liverpool amid ‘source’ claim

Noel Whelan has insisted Liverpool will be “turned over by most teams” if they continue to turn in “lethargic and uninterested” performances.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Reds “remind him of watching Man United” during the 2021-22 season.

Liverpool were defeated 4-1 away at Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday (7 September).

The Merseysiders have notched just nine points from their first six games of the Premier League season.

As per data analyst Dan Kennett (3 September), Liverpool have been outrun in every top-flight game in the 2022-23 campaign thus far.

Whelan insisted there must be some “stern words spoken” in the Anfield dressing room in order to arrest the Reds’ slide.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They reminded me of watching Man United six months ago.

“They looked lethargic, slow, uninterested, not tracking back, not staying with runners. All over the field, it was shambolic.

“That’s not the Liverpool we know, and to see that kind of performance was very surprising.

“It was easy to cut through them, the goals they conceded were soft. They could’ve been dealt with at source.

“But if you don’t bring the energy, hard work, or desire – you’ll get turned over by most teams.

“There was no fluidity about them. We’ve always said Liverpool are almost telepathic – but they were miles off the pace.

“There need to be some stern words said in the dressing room by the players and the manager.”
