Whelan: Leeds teen Cresswell in line for first XI after news from Elland Road

Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell is knocking on the door of the senior side after signing a new long-term contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the teenage centre-back could compete for a first-team role despite the competition ahead of him.

As confirmed on Wednesday (25th August), Leeds have tied the 19-year-old down to a new four-year deal.

The academy graduate has also been called up to England’s under-21 squad for the upcoming international break.

Leeds also have Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk at centre-half.

However, Whelan suggested Cresswell could push the quartet after committing to a new deal.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s a fantastic centre-half. Not only that but he’s a leader, he’s been captain before with the under-23s.

“He really is a brilliant prospect for the future and a big personality in and around that age as well. England recognition as well in that age group.

“He’s definitely one that is really pushing, really progressing. Hopefully, we see a little bit more of him this season as well at times. We know it’s a long season.

“We have got lots of centre-half places covered with the new arrivals last year.

“But he’ll definitely be feeling very confident in his own ability in himself now with a four-year contract and the way things are going there for him at Leeds United.

“Another good young player that deserves that four-year contract with the effort he’s put in.”

Cresswell has just one first-team appearance under his belt so far for Leeds.

He is captain of the under-23s at Elland road.
