Whelan slams Celtic over new Postecoglou ‘farce’ that’s ‘very disappointing’
Noel Whelan has slammed Celtic over the “farce” of appointing Ange Postecoglou as manager.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Bhoys had shown no faith in the new boss after his contract terms were revealed.
As confirmed on Thursday (June 10th), Celtic have handed Postecoglou a 12-month rolling contract at Parkhead.
Postecoglou has joined from Japanese outfit Yokohama F. Marinos.
Whelan suggested the 12-month deal proved the 55-year-old was never the Bhoys’ first choice as manager.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It goes to show what a farce it’s been appointing a new manager.
“I think that just says he wasn’t our number one and we can’t get anybody through the door so we’re going to give it a 12-month period. It’s a very disappointing one.
“I don’t think there’s too many Celtic fans out there that are licking their lips and rubbing their hands at the prospect of him being manager. No one kind of knew about him, he’s a bolt out of the blue.
“Yes, he’s done well in Asia with Australia and over in Japan. That’s one thing. I always think that Celtic and a club of their stature demand a bigger name.
“Something where you’re going to say: ‘There’s a four-year contract, you’re our man and show that kind of faith and confidence in the manager.’
“It’s not showing too much faith right now, with a 12-month rolling contract, that he is our man and we’re fully on board and behind him.”
Postecoglou’s only managerial job in Europe was a 10-month spell with Greek outfit Panachaiki.
He spent four years as Australia boss before joining Yokohama.
