Whelan suggests when Steven Gerrard could be sacked after Aston Villa source’s update

Noel Whelan has suggested the losing manager could be sacked when Leicester City face Aston Villa next Saturday (10 September).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted both Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers will be under “a lot of pressure” after their dire starts to the new campaign.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (29 August) that Gerrard’s position as manager is far from secure and the club’s ambitious American owners won’t hesitate to sack him if results do not improve.

Villa have picked up just three points in five games, while cash-strapped Leicester have managed a solitary point so far in the new campaign.

Gerrard, who succeeded Dean Smith last November, has led his side to 10 losses in their last 15 Premier League games.

Whelan claimed decision-makers will be “talking upstairs” if either side fall to defeat next week.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a results-driven business.

“Both sides haven’t had a good return this season.

“I think there’s a lot of pressure on these two managers coming into this game. This is two teams who are likely to be at the bottom of the table with very little points next week.

“Fans will be worried. That becomes clear for the board, and that gets people talking upstairs.

“Sometimes there isn’t enough time for a manager, decisions are taken very quickly – and that game, I can see being a potential deal-breaker for one of these managers if they lose.”
