Whelan ‘surprised’ by Bamford update from Leeds as Instagram pictures emerge
Noel Whelan has admitted the injured Patrick Bamford will be a “big miss” for Leeds United against West Ham on Saturday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds hitman revealed his surprise at the news the 28-year-old would not feature against the Irons.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference (23rd September), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Bamford would miss the home tie against David Moyes’ men.
The newly-capped England international missed the League Cup win over Fulham with an ankle injury.
Bamford posted pictures on Instagram (Tuesday, 21st September) of him at a community event, with just light strapping on his ankle.
Whelan admitted he expected the striker to be back after sitting out in midweek.
He insisted the centre-forward would be sorely missed up front.
Asked if news of Bamford’s absence came as a surprise, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. It did a little bit.
“We were hoping that with a week’s rest, we didn’t really need him for the League Cup game.
“We hoped that would give him the opportunity to overcome any kind of niggle that he had.
“It does seem at the moment that we’re going to have to lead the line without Patrick. It’s a big miss.”
Tyler Roberts led the line for Leeds in the victory over Fulham.

However, the Whites had to win on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Bamford has netted once in five Premier League games this term, with a further two assists under his belt.
In other news, Leeds United have been dealt another potential “nightmare” injury blow, claims ex-manager.
