Whelan tips surprise Leeds player as potential Bamford replacement after development
Noel Whelan has suggested Dan James could fill in as striker cover for Patrick Bamford after signing for Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds forward claimed the 23-year-old could operate anywhere among the front three – including as a centre forward.
The Wales international joined the Whites on a permanent deal from Manchester United on deadline day.
The 24-cap international is a versatile winger who has played regularly on both flanks during his career.
However, he has barely featured as a striker for club or country.
Despite that, Whelan suggested he could step up through the middle should first-choice hitman Bamford be unavailable.
“Dan James can play anywhere across the front three, through the centre or out on the wing,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“He can play through the middle if need be. Patrick Bamford, touch wood he doesn’t get injured.
“It’s great to have top-quality players in the side. We’re building a side and it’s looking really exciting.
“We’ve seen what he can do for Wales. He’s not scared of the hard work, he’s definitely got the talent and the ability.
“He’s a player who can play across the front three, multiple positions if need be. He will enhance the team and fit in very nicely with the players we have already.”

Bamford did not miss a single Premier League game for Leeds last season and failed to start just one.
Marcelo Bielsa often used Rodrigo or Tyler Roberts up front when substituting the English hitman.
