‘Where did Rangers get £5m from?’ – Pundit suggests ‘mystery backer’ behind Mohamed Diomande deal

Rangers must have had a mystery backer to agree a stunning £5million deal for Mohamed Diomande.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie was baffled that the Gers had the cash to splash on the highly-rated FC Nordsjaelland midfielder.

As revealed by Football Insider (23 January), the 22-year-old has headed to Glasgow to undergo a medical after agreeing a move to the club.

The Ivory Coast under-21 international is set to become Philippe Clement’s first permanent signing this month for a fee approaching £5million.

McAvennie suggested that the Gers may have been given external backing to finance the deal and claimed that it would be a “big blow” for Celtic fans if the Hoops don’t now recruit in a similar manner this month.

“If they’ve paid £5million for Diomande, then someone, a mystery backer, must have backed them,” he told Football Insider.

“Where did Rangers get £5million from?

“This has been kept out of the limelight and secret, because I don’t know if Rangers have £5million to spend.

“That’s a lot of money for Rangers if they spend that much.

“It would be a big blow to Celtic fans if Rangers spend that much on one player this month and they don’t.

“But, they’re looking for a player who can score goals from the midfield.”
