Wolves complete league record transfer in £16m+ deal for 20-year-old – reliable journalist
By Danny Wright
Wolves have completed the signing of Ruben Neves from Porto, according to a reliable journalist.
Tim Nash, a former Wolves correspondent for the Express and Star, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday morning that a Championship record deal for the 20-year-old of somewhere between £16million and £17million has been all but confirmed.
Neves’ arrival at Molineux will be somewhat of a coup for the Black Country outfit as he had recently attracted attention from some of England’s top clubs.
Portuguese news outlet A Bola reported that Liverpool and Chelsea had made contact with Porto about signing the two-times Portugal international, but they appear to have now lost out to Championship outfit Wolves.
Neves is understood to be reuniting Nuno Espirito Santo in the West Midlands after the two worked together for one year at Porto last season.
The midfielder made 18 appearances across all competitions, earning six starting spots in the league as he struggled to impress Nuno.
Neves will be Wolves’ fifth signing of the summer, following Roderick Miranda, Barry Douglas, Ryan Bennet and Phil Osofu-Ayeh in signing for the club.
Football Insider Verdict
Wolves simply have to get promoted within the next two seasons because of their crazy spending in the second tier. Neves’ move to Molineux is perhaps one of the maddest European transfers in recent history as the Portuguese midfielder is highly-rated on the continent and has been tipped for big things in the future. The deal seems very similar to Carlos Teves and Javier Mascherano’s moves to West Ham a few years ago. Both were destined to be top footballers, but ended up with a side struggling in the Premier League. Nuno cannot afford to drop the ball in his first season with Wolves. Financial fair play could become a problem in the future if they don’t go up as soon as possible.
In other Wolves news, the club are also plotting a loan move for this European ace.
