Kieran Maguire issues Wolves FFP claim as new deal agreed – ‘people don’t realise’
Wolves can support their women’s team without worrying about the impact on their Financial Fair Play standing.
That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Midlands side’s latest commercial deal.
Wolves announced last Tuesday (2 July) that London-based company Trade Nation had become their official FX trading partner.
The deal extends over the 2022-23 campaign and covers Wolves men’s, women’s and esports teams.
Women’s football in the UK is in a growth phase and is expected to accelerate further with the promotion of the WSL on Sky Sports and England’s historic European Championship triumph.
But most women’s sides still operate at a loss and were hit severely by the pandemic.
Maguire explains, however, that no club can use FFP as an excuse not to financially back their women’s teams.
“The losses made by the women’s team don’t count towards FFP,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.
“Therefore, it’s a no-lose position because, if the women’s team do start to generate profits, that can be added to those of the parent company.
“If the women’s team are losing money, those losses don’t come out of the FFP budget and are effectively just ignored.
“The men’s and women’s teams are seperate companies but the holding company, W.W (1990), covers both.
“Many people don’t realise that academy, infrastructure, and community losses are all exempt from FFP.”

Wolves Women won the the National League North Division in 2021-22.
They begin their 2022-23 campaign in the second tier of the women’s game against Liverpool Feds next Sunday (21 August).
