Wolves ‘highly unlikely’ to succeed with VAR vote – sources
Wolves are “highly unlikely” to see their efforts to abolish VAR succeed following their proposal to the Premier League, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke admitted the technology is likely here to stay despite the criticism towards it this season.
A vote was triggered after Wolves formally submitted a resolution to the Premier League, with all 20 member clubs set to share their stance on the issue at the annual general meeting on 6 June.
O’Rourke admitted it was a “shock” when Wolves made their proposal after feeling VAR hasn’t had the desired effect this season.
Any potential rule changes need 14 clubs to vote in favour of the motion.
Wolves likely to fail in bid to abolish VAR
VAR was initially introduced in 2019 to help the on-field officials come to the right decisions and review any “clear and obvious” errors.
Wolves claimed VAR was introduced “in good faith” but has led to “numerous unintended negative consequences that are damaging the relationship between fans and football”.
O’Rourke believes the West Midlands club have had a “rough deal” with VAR this season after various contentious decisions have gone against them.
The Premier League is unlikely to offer any benefits for scrapping the technology after helping develop it over the past five years.

The governing body has “acknowledged the concerns” regarding VAR but insisted it still “fully supports” the technology and is looking to work with the PGMOL to make improvements.
The ‘Big Six’ clubs led by Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham are expected to stick with VAR for at least another season.
