Wolves launch seven-figure bid for proven Championship goal scorer – report

By Harvey Byrne

Wolves have launched a seven-figure bid for Preston striker Jordan Hugill, according to a report.

News outlet HITC Sport has claimed that the Midlands club have sent out a £2million offer to their Championship rivals for the 24-year-old target man.

It is detailed that Paul Lambert’s side have been keeping tabs on the powerful forward’s progress for several months and that they have now firmed up their interest in securing the player’s signing.

The report claims that Lambert is looking to add some “genuine Championship quality” to his squad in the summer and Hugill would certainly fit that quota with 12 goals from 44 league appearances for Preston this season.

However, it is also reported that the Lancashire outfit are reluctant to lose their goalscorer as they view him as key to their future plans.

Hugill has been at Preston for three years after joining from Port Vale in the summer of 2014 for an undisclosed fee.

He has managed to bag 20 goals and provide four assists in 85 appearances in total for the Lilywhites, but the Middlesbrough-born player’s future at the club could remain in doubt with his contract at the club set to expire next summer.

Football Insider verdict:

The Wolves board went big last summer and splashed out on a total of eight senior players, including the purchases of Ivan Cavaleiro and Romain Saiss for a combined £10million. However, the new ownership took the wrong approach as they brought in many players from across Europe instead of looking at players who have proven they could play to a high level in the English second tier. Now, Hugill may be a step in the right direction for the sort of target’s fans want to see the club go for. However, the powerful forward’s strike rate isn’t that great and there may be better value out there for Lambert’s team.

In other Wolves transfer news, the club have also made a £3million offer for this £6,000-a-week rising star.
