Wolves make unexpected ‘approach’ for ex-captain after deal agreed

Wolves are trying to add a former captain of the club to their ranks as they aim to stay in the Premier League under new boss Rob Edwards.

Wolves‘ Premier League survival prospects look slim as it stands with the club sat bottom of the table with just two points from their first 11 games of the season.

Vitor Pereira was sacked as Wolves boss at the start of November following a crushing defeat to fellow strugglers Fulham, with a number of targets mentioned to succeed him.

Rob Edwards has now been appointed as Wolves’ new manager after he forced the move through and left Middlesbrough in acrimonious fashion.

The club have confirmed that he will be joined by Boro assistant Harry Watling, while Joleon Lescott has been linked with a return to Molineux, but it is another ex-player who has been targeted for a return.

Wolves want Conor Coady to return in a coaching role

The Telegraph‘s John Percy has reported that Wolves have made a move to bring Conor Coady back to the club after he was playing for the club when Edwards was previously a coach, but sources claim it is “highly unlikely.”

The absence of Premier League experience is a “major error” that the owners accept, according to the report, but Percy has confirmed that Coady would only be returning to Molineux as a coach, not in a playing capacity.

He was made Wolves’ captain following their promotion to the top-flight in 2018 until his exit in 2023, and he made 317 appearances for the club in the eight years he was there.

Coady is currently contracted to Championship side Wrexham, but has only made six appearances so far this season amid some poor early season form.

Edwards’ move to Wolves has been questioned

Edwards has accrued some great experience in management despite being only 42-years-old, with spells at Forest Green Rovers, Watford, Luton and Middlesbrough all on his CV up to now.

The fact he knows Wolves well, having previously played for them, is known to have been a big factor in his return, but many have questioned his exit from the Riverside Stadium considering the two clubs’ contrasting fortunes this season.

He had guided Boro to third spot in the Championship prior to his exit and they are well in with a chance of automatic promotion, while Wolves are struggling and will be resigned to relegation if he is unable to instantly improve their fortunes.

Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier exclusively told Football Insider that he was unsure why Edwards had left Middlesbrough to join Wolves, and even though he will be confident of success, it looks as if his desire to have Coady back will not be fulfilled soon.
