‘Wolves set for financial blow as Gibbs-White to Man City detail emerges’

Wolves are facing a nightmare scenario as details of Morgan Gibbs-White’s move to Manchester City have emerged.

Gibbs-White spent 14 years at Wolves from the academy to the first team before joining rivals Nottingham Forest in 2022 for £25million.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar season for Forest last time out scoring seven times and registering 10 assists as the East Midlands club qualified for the Europa Conference League.

Now the midfielder has been linked with a move away from the City Ground this summer thanks to some eye-catching displays.

Gibbs-White frozen out of City spending spree

Man City were one of the clubs interested in signing Gibbs-White, but according to the Daily Mail interest from the Citizens has gone cold.

The asking price coupled with the availability of Lyon forward Rayan Cherki put City off buying.

The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse said: “Gibbs-White has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, though at this stage that trail seems to have gone cold.

“The asking price of at least £70m was deemed steep by City, who were able to sign Rayan Cherki for half the price, and register him for the Club World Cup.”

If Gibbs-White stays at Forest this summer that could have a huge effect on Wolves’ transfer budget.

“Wolves will be hoping Gibbs-White does leave Nottingham Forest this summer, as Mail Sport understands they are due 10 per cent of the profit on any sale,” Collomosse said.

“Gibbs-White joined Forest in 2022 for an initial £25m, rising to a possible £42.5m, every penny counts these days and it would be a welcome windfall.”

Forest asking price may put more clubs off

Football Insider verdict

Forest’s £70m asking price for Gibbs-White reflects the fact that Nuno Espirito Santo clearly does not want to see one of his star players leave the club.

With a European journey incoming next season for Forest for the first time since 1995/96, Gibbs-White will be at the forefront of their hopes of winning the Europa Conference League.

Pep Guardiola is clearly an admirer of the Englishman, but with Cherki’s lower asking price, it made sense for City to move for the Frenchman instead.

City have also spent plenty of money in other positions with the arrival of Rayan Ait-Nouri, from Wolves, and Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

It would be a surprise though if this was the last we heard of Gibbs-White in this transfer window, and Wolves will certainly hope any sale can by completed.

Vitor Pereira has already been in the transfer market to sign Celta Vigo forward Fer Lopez to replace Matheus Cunha, who joined Manchester United.

Wolves are expected to be busy in the market over the coming months with incomings expected to try and strengthen the squad.

Pereira will be hoping for a better start to next season after a horrendous opening to the 2024/25 campaign which saw Gary O’Neil sacked.
