Wolves summer signing could now ‘re-join’ his former club in January

Wolves summer signing Fer Lopez could be about to return to Celta Vigo in the new year after a hugely disappointing start to life at Molineux.

Wolves have endured a dismal first few months of the 2025-26 season, to say the least, as they remain winless and rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.

Rob Edwards has been appointed as Wolves’ new manager following Vitor Pereira‘s sacking, yet not much changed in his first game last Saturday as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

They signed exciting attacker Fer Lopez from Celta Vigo in the summer for around £19million [BBC] after his breakout La Liga campaign.

The Spanish youth international was one of their marquee signings ahead of this season, but he has really struggled to make his mark so far and could be about to return to his boyhood club in January.

Celta want to re-sign Lopez in January with Wolves talks planned

Lopez has featured just seven times for Wolves since joining, with just one start and 116 minutes played in the Premier League so far.

He has only come on off the bench once in their last five league outings, and Spanish outlet AS have now reported that Celta are considering a possible return for Lopez in the new year.

The La Liga side, who are currently 12th in the table, have declared their intent to try and thrash out a loan deal for the 21-year-old, but negotiations are yet to begin and they must let a player leave to create space in their squad before Lopez can be re-signed.

Their “next step” will be to try to convince Wolves’ chiefs that loaning Lopez back to his old club is the best thing for all parties, with his wages and any loan fee not believed to be a potential issue.

What Vitor Pereira said about Lopez before his sacking

Wolves’ turbulent campaign is showing little sign of getting any better, despite Pereira being sacked at the start of November just weeks after penning a new contract.

The Portuguese manager did not play Lopez often, yet backed him to succeed last month prior to his exit as he said: “He has a lot of quality. He’s young, of course, but the time of Fer will come for sure.

“He’s working hard, trying to be ready to help and this is the spirit. A manager must understand and learn with experience to balance the fire and the talent, and when they are ready to play.

“For this kind of player, he plays today but tomorrow we will see. Don’t criticise yourself or push too much.

The Spaniard will certainly hold that desire to succeed at Molineux, but it seems unlikely that he is called upon by new boss Edwards as they aim to pull themselves back into survival contention.

A move back to Celta could well be the way forward for his development, as some more good form in La Liga would surely see him return to Wolves a changed man next summer.
