Worst of my career: West Ham 27-year-old makes honest admission about last season

By Derek Smithson

West Ham attacker Sofiane Feghouli has described last year as the “worst season” of his entire career.

The 27-year-old moved to the London Stadium last summer and joined with a big expectancy after his spell at Spanish club Valencia.

However, the right winger struggled to make the desired impact for the Hammers and had a slow start to life in English football.

The Algeria international made 27 appearances across all competitions last campaign, scoring just four goals and supplying three assists in return.

Feghouli is hoping to use the disappointing season going forward and has ranked it as his worst ever performing campaign.

“It’s been my worst season since I was a professional in terms of playing time,” Feghouli told French outlet BFM TV. “But there was a positive too. I had been around Spain, it was a new challenge, the Premier League was really important to me, and this season will be useful to me for the next few years.”

West Ham slumped to an 11th-placed finish in the Premier League and Feghouli was not the only player to see his own individual form drop considerably.

The Londoners were disappointed with their first year in a new ground and failed to compete for the European spots.

Slaven Bilic’s side qualified for Europe and finished seventh in the 2015/16 campaign, but were someway off the mark last year.

Feghouli will be under pressure to chip in with some goals from the wide areas as the Hammers managed just 47 goals in their 38 Premier League matches last year.
