‘Would be a great signing’ – Exclusive: Hutton wowed by Celtic pursuit of ‘Quality’ player
Alan Hutton was impressed by the idea that Celtic could attempt to sign Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former Scotland international admitted that while he believes signing Wanyama would be a great move by the Hoops, he questioned if they could afford it.
Football Insider recently revealed that the Hoops had already been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the 28-year-old powerhouse as Hertha Berlin had moved into pole position in the race for his services.
It is believed that while Neil Lennon’s side are keen on reuniting with Wanyama, they aren’t prepared to break their wage structured for him.
Hutton admitted that he thought the midfield-enforcer would likely leave Spurs as he questioned whether he was good enough for the club.
When asked if Wanyama has a future at Spurs, Hutton told Football Insider: “I can’t see it, to be honest, they have a lot of options.
“I know he has been injured but he hasn’t played many games.
“So to be honest, I do think Tottenham will move him on, £10million is a lot of money so whose going to pay that?
“I’m sure I read somewhere Celtic were talking about him or they were linked to him before.
“The thing is with that idea is the money, I still believe he is a very good player, at Tottenham level not so sure but if Celtic got him it would be a great signing.
“He’s obviously got great quality so that would be a great move for the likes of Celtic.
“Time will tell, but it all depends on how much Spurs would want for them.”
Wanyama has appeared only four times for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, with him playing a grand total of only 23 minutes in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old has been with Spurs since joining from Southampton in 2016 and is contracted to stay with the North London club until 2021.
In other Celtic news, Danny Mills accused a Hoops favourite of playing the emotional card.
