Wout Weghorst tipped to agree Man United move amid ‘big’ claim – pundit
Frank McAvennie has suggested Wout Weghorst could be offered a permanent deal at Man United.
But, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted he is just a “stopgap” until they sign a striker in the summer.
As quoted by the Manchester Evening News (26 January), Weghorst said he would like to sign a permanent deal with the club at the end of the season.
The striker’s loan deal from Burnley does not include and option or an obligation to buy and United are chasing down an elite-level forward in the summer.
Erik ten Hag’s side have been heavily linked with Tottenham star Harry Kane in their search for a number nine.
When asked if there is a chance Weghorst could be offered a permanent deal in the summer, McAvennie told Football Insider: “He is a short term fix.
“He might be offered a contract but at the moment he is the fix. If they can’t get a good striker now, he is a great fit until they get somebody in the summer. Whether it is Harry Kane or someone else.
“I have got a feeling that he is just a short term option. He might get a contract but he certainly will not be playing all the time once they sign someone else.

“He will know he is just a stopgap. But he will get game time and he will not go somewhere bigger than Man United.
“Every time he speaks it is like he can’t believe he is at Man United which is so refreshing. He is not doing anything wrong at the moment but he is not the top striker Man United need.“
