‘Wow, I’ve Never Seen That In My Life’ – Exclusive: Hutton on ‘Shock’ Rangers sight at Ibrox
Alan Hutton has blasted Motherwell’s tactics after Rangers managed to pull off a “massive win” at Ibrox on Saturday.
The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admitted he had never seen a 5-5-0 utilised by a team before and suggested it would have been “shocking” for the Steelmen’s stars to actually play in.
Steve Robinson’s men took the lead through Callum Lang at Ibrox but second-half goals from Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten secured the three points for the Glasgow giants.
Speaking after the game, Steven Gerrard admitted he had never come up against a formation which utilised five defenders and a further five midfielders and suggested he would have to adapt moving forward.
Hutton admitted he was stunned to see Wells’ tactics and insisted it would have been a horrible experience for Robinson’s players.
Hutton told Football Insider: “It was a huge, huge victory. Obviously, when they went 1-0 down, I think it’s a goal they could have cut out – I think Barisic has to get tighter to stop the cross and then at the back post it was Lang that scored that came in on the blind side of Tavernier.
“We’re being pernickety here I think, because of being that good, we’re just trying to pick out anything so it could have been avoided but, I mean, the formation that they played, wow, I’ve never seen that before in my life.
“I do understand that Rangers are a massive threat going forward and they’re coming to Ibrox and they have to try and be solid but a 5-5-0? Come on.
“As a player that would be shocking to play in. It shows you where Rangers are at, how much of a threat they are going forward and the way teams are thinking of them.
“This is a massive three points, in previous years they may have crumbled and not got the victory but they stuck at it, they stuck to the game plan, they flooded forward, created chances, and they got their just rewards in the end and came out comfortable winners.”
