‘Wrexham working to agree Tom Lawrence deal after Rangers exit’

Wrexham are working on a move to bring Tom Lawrence to The Racecourse as he is set to leave Rangers on a free transfer.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 31-year-old could still play a key role in a Championship side.

Wrexham are not thought to be the only club in for Lawrence, but are prepared offer the Wales international the chance to play for his hometown club.

Football Insider revealed on 21 May that Rangers were happy to let Lawrence leave as part of a major cut which saw them save more than £4million on their wage bill.

As a result, he is preparing to field offers from a number of EFL clubs in the coming weeks and Wrexham are hopeful they can make a compelling offer.

The Red Dragons are keen to utilise the free agent market following their promotion from League One, and have been linked with the likes of Jamie Vardy and Ben Davies.

Wrexham line up Tom Lawrence offer after Rangers decision

Football Insider first revealed in April that Lawrence would be allowed to leave Rangers, placing a number of clubs on alert as Gers lined up replacements.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, explained that Lawrence believes he can still make a difference for a top Championship side and will explore his options.

Tom Lawrence has always been a decent player,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s in his early 30s now, but he could still do a very good job in the right team.

“He will certainly believe he can still do a job for a top Championship club, and there’s no shortage of interest from him at that level.

“He can do a job in midfield, but also pops up with a few goals which is always a good asset to have.

“Wrexham are one of the clubs I’m told will be looking to bring him in.

“They’ve done their due diligence in the background and will be working to reach an agreement.

“From their point of view, they will believe they can make a compelling offer to convince him to pick them ahead of other Championship clubs.

“Whether that’s money or pulling on his heartstrings to go back to his hometown club.

“So it’s a deal they want to do, and one I think he will probably be open to.”

Charlie Savage update emerges in Birmingham City race

While free transfers are very much on the agenda at The Racecourse, they are not afraid to spend money on players to improve their squad.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 3 June that Wrexham have entered the race for Charlie Savage, alongside the likes of Birmingham and Blackburn.

The Wales international is also attracting interest from abroad after establishing himself as one of the most exciting young players in the EFL.

This comes after Football Insider revealed Wrexham will have a £30million war chest to spend this summer as they aim to be competitive in the Championship.
