Wyness suggests Aston Villa are gearing up for summer firesale

Former Aston Villa chief Keith Wyness believes “there will be sales” at Villa Park this summer after they suffered losses of £138million in 2023.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – said Unai Emery will have a much smaller squad for the 2024-25 campaign.

According to Uefa’s 2023 financial report, Villa suffered losses of £138million last year.

With Premier League financial regulations limiting losses to £105million over a three-year period, the Birmingham-based side will have to be wary of their spending.

Emery’s side could be helped by the financial boost that comes with Champions League qualification with Villa currently fourth in the Premier League table.

Villa’s former chief predicts some big departures

I think there will [definitely] be sales in the summer,” Wyness told Football Insider.

I think also Emery’s now had a chance to review his squad and he has a very keen eye on certain types of players that he wants.

So I think there will be some pruning and definitely I think there’ll be a smaller squad to a degree as well.

We’ll see Emery do some divestments of players pretty quickly in the window, then try and get a settled squad ready for next season.

I think they’ve got some quality in there to be able to sell to achieve the right numbers they want and keep the whole thing moving for Villa.
