Wyness suggests what Everton news today will mean for second financial breach charge

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has admitted he is “concerned” the club could still be deducted 12 points in total after the case for their second financial breach is heard.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – warned that Monday’s (26 February) appeal verdict may only be a “temporary reprieve” for the Toffees.

The Premier League revealed on Monday that Everton have seen their deduction for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) reduced from 10 to six points upon appeal.

However, the Merseysiders – alongside relegation rivals Nottingham Forest – now face a separate PSR charge and are expected to hear a verdict before the end of the season.

Wyness ‘concerned’ about Everton receiving 12-point total deduction

In the appeal, the Premier League upheld two of Everton’s nine complaints about their 10-point penalty – which was applied last November.

Wyness revealed he is “worried” about the second hearing – as details of why the other seven complaints failed have not yet been released by the Premier League.

He told Football Insider: “I’m concerned about it ending up back at 10 points, or even 12 points after the second hearing.

“There’s got to be a quicker and better way to handle this. I’m disappointed, but it’s mainly the process which has disappointed me.

“Without knowing the detail behind the seven points which were rejected – this whole process has shown that it’s not clear or transparent.

“I’m really not sure how big the punishment could be for the second breach, but I’m worried it could be as high as six points again.

“Without knowing the logic behind how they’ve handled each point of the first appeal, I just don’t know.

“This is only a temporary reprieve. It was only a few weeks ago that everyone was saying that Everton are safe. We then dropped into the relegation zone.

“There’s a long way to go yet, and the main thing is that Everton have got to start winning football matches.”
