Xabi Alonso to Liverpool: ‘Huge obstacles’ emerge as well-placed source shares the latest
Liverpool face “huge obstacles” in their pursuit of first-choice manager target Xabi Alonso, sources have told Football Insider.
The 42-year-old Bayer Leverkusen manager has been the Reds’ first choice to replace Jurgen Klopp since he announced his intention to quit the club last month.
Alonso has his Leverkusen side sitting top of the Bundesliga and is on course to win a historic treble with the German side this season.
Football Insider revealed on Monday (26 February) that the Spaniard is “settled and happy” in Germany despite the interest from former club Liverpool.
A well-placed source has now told Football Insider in a new update today that Alonso has “reservations” about replacing a legendary figure like Klopp – another “obstacle” to him taking the Anfield hot seat.
Alonso has ‘reservations’ about taking Liverpool hot seat
The Reds boss is adored at Anfield after his trophy-laden nine years at the club – and is widely considered one of the most charismatic managers in world football.
Liverpool continue to do their homework on several manager options but are keen to bring Alonso back to the club in the off-season.
Bayern Munich are also keen on the Spaniard with Thomas Tuchel set to quit the club later this year.
It is believed the ex-midfielder could be tempted to remain in his post and lead Leverkusen out in the Champions League in the 2024-25 campaign.
The German club are yet to be defeated this season and could win the Bundesliga, DfB-Pokal and Europa League.

Football Insider revealed on 27 January that Alonso has a clause inserted in his contract that would allow him to leave for any of his former clubs – Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Real Sociedad.
His deal at Leverkusen is set to run until June 2026.
