Yankuba Minteh dangerous, 3/10 flops: Brighton player ratings vs Everton

Brighton’s winless start to the season continues and Fabian Hurzeler will have some concerns over a couple of his stars.

The Seagulls drew 1-1 in their first Premier League match against Fulham, being denied by all three points by a 96th minute Rodrigo Muniz equaliser.

Despite plenty of chances against Everton, Brighton again failed to show their ruthless streak, including a missed penalty, and ended up losing 2-0 in the first ever Premier League match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Illiman Ndiaye and James Garner gave Everton a famous win, with a goal in either half.

De Cuyper struggles

Bart Verbruggen – 6

Got a hand on Garner’s strike, but could not react quickly enough to keep out the close-range effort. Not overly tested

Mats Wieffer (On for Brajan Gruda 86′) – 5

Jack Grealish looked up for the match and tested Wieffer’s defensive capabilities, especially in the first half. Yellow carded and still adapting to the Premier League.

Jan Paul van Hecke – 6

Struck the post with a deflected strike which was a good effort from the defender. Brighton’s most solid defender.

Lewis Dunk – 6

Dependable and solid in the back four. Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke form a commanding partnership, and need more protection from their midfield.

Maxim De Cuyper (Ferdi Kadioglu 67′) – 4

Yellow carded for a foul on Illiman Ndiaye and the Everton forward gave the Belgian a torrid time. Substituted with twenty minutes remaining amid his tough afternoon.

Wasteful Welbeck

Carlos Baleba (Off for Jack Hinshelwood 46′) – 6

Taken off at half-time after a promising first period for Brighton, and the Seagulls suffered in the second half without his prescience.

Yasin Ayari (Off for Diego Gomez, 67′) – 5

Ayari looked a threat when Brighton had control in parts of the first half, but another player who faded out of the game in the second half.

Kaoru Mitoma – 5

A terrific effort from the winger when he showed incredible control before firing a strike off the crossbar. Otherwise was ineffective and showed nothing in the second half.

Matt O’Riley – 6

Thwarted by Jordan Pickford, in one of Brighton’s biggest chances of the first half after a shocking back pass from James Tarkowski. Was anonymous in the second half after a bright first period. Should have taken the penalty.

Yankuba Minteh – 8

Positive and drove at James Garner whenever the opportunity presented itself. Looked Brighton’s most dangerous player and won the penalty which Danny Welbeck missed.

Danny Welbeck – 3

Missed a sitter from just a couple of yards out after he was set up by Minteh. Wasn’t effective in bringing other players into the game as he has often proved to be. Then placed a soft penalty straight in to the arms of Pickford. Poor.

Substitutions prove ineffective

Kadioglu was one of the subs who provided no impact against Everton.

Substitutes

Jack Hinshelwood (On for Carlos Baleba 46′) – 5

Came on at half-time, but did not contribute going forward to help Brighton back into the game. An ineffective sub.

Ferdi Kadioglu (On for Maxim De Cuyper 67′) – 5

Yellow carded late on for a late sliding challenge on Carlos Alcaraz. Made no impact from the bench.

Diego Gomez (On for Yasin Ayari 67′) – 5

Another sub who did nothing to change the pattern of the game as Everton cruised to the three points.

Brajan Gruda (On for Mats Wieffer 86′) – 6

No time to change the game.
