Yerry Mina backed to complete Everton move as medical begins – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted he would be “stunned” if Yerry Mina is given a new contract at Everton following yet another injury.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed Conor Coady and James Tarkowski to be the defensive answer for the Toffees this term.

Mina limped off in the 70th minute as Everton fell 1-0 at Goodison Park against Chelsea on Saturday (6 August).

Speaking post-match and quoted by the Liverpool Echo, manager Frank Lampard revealed the Colombia international had suffered an ankle injury and will be out for “a while”.

Fellow centre-back Ben Godfrey is set to be sidelined for months after he fractured his leg in the first half of the clash.

Mina is out of contract at the end of the season and there has been no talk of a potential renewal.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed early on Monday that Connor Coady began an Everton medical on Sunday after Wolves accepted their loan-to-buy offer.

Whelan insisted there is “no way” Lampard will sanction a new deal for the defender.

“He’ll be utilised until the end of the season if there are any injuries or suspensions,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But there’s no way he’ll get a new contract. I’d be stunned if he’s still around next season.

“If they go out and get Conor Coady, you’ve got two really experienced players and two leaders in him and Tarkowski.

“That’s what they’ve been missing – that quality, and that partnership.

“They could be the difference for Everton because they’ll have to be defensively sound.”
