Yoane Wissa exit to trigger ‘big-name’ Newcastle signing as Anthony Gordon money spent

Newcastle United are ready to sign off on a “big-name signing” once they can get striker Yoane Wissa off their wage bill this summer, sources have told Football Insider

The Magpies have seen their transfer kitty boosted significantly by the £70million sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, with the “majority” of that sum set to be splashed on additions to their own squad.

Gordon’s departure has also strengthened the Tynesiders’ desire to add a new striker to their ranks even further, but sources say that a deal will only take place once Wissa has been moved on.

The DR Congo international’s £55m move from Brentford simply hasn’t worked out, and the recruitment team are now exploring potential solutions ahead of next season.

Newcastle’s transfer plans have been made harder by the fact that they do not have Champions League football on offer in 2026-27, but they are still hopeful of securing some of their top targets.

Who is on Newcastle’s striker shortlist at the moment?

Newcastle know that they need a big addition if they are to replace the quality that Gordon provided in the final third, and they have already set their sights on some potentially marquee signings.

Football Insider revealed back in May that Newcastle are “capable” of meeting Luis Suarez’s £70m release clause, as they are keen to try to prise him away from Sporting CP.

The Portuguese giants have little intention of entertaining a reduced fee on that clause, after a campaign that saw the Colombian plunder 38 goals in all competitions.

Offloading Wissa also holds the key in that department, as PIF clearly feel more comfortable shelling out such a big fee once they have a little more money coming in the opposite direction.

The Magpies are also keen admirers of Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who is due to return to Stamford Bridge imminently after a season spent on loan at Bayern Munich.

The 24-year-old hit 11 goals in all competitions for the German champions, but Chelsea are looking to find a permanent suitor for him this summer as he has little future in their colours.

What progress has been made on Yoane Wissa sale?

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider at the start of May that Newcastle are ready to take a loss on Wissa this summer, rather than holding out for anything close to the £55m that they paid for him.

He made it clear that it would be a “bigger risk” to keep the forward at St James’ Park for another season, as his value could potentially plummet even further if he endures another difficult campaign.

There has been reported interest from an unnamed Premier League club in recent weeks, but it has been noted that they only value Wissa in the region of £15-20m.

That would mean Newcastle taking a hit of over £30m on their initial outlay, but that looks set to be a necessary evil if they truly want to get him out the door.
