Youssef Chermiti fighting for his Rangers future after deal agreed

Rangers could now cash in on Youssef Chermiti after confirming the arrival of proven goalscoring Lawrence Shankland.

The Gers have signed Shankland on a free transfer from rivals Hearts, creating the possibility that the club could let Chermiti leave this summer.

Whilst Chermiti scored 15 goals during his debut season in Glasgow, the striker only scored in eight matches across the campaign, including five in two games against Falkirk.

Rangers finished the season trophyless and without the possibility of qualifying for the league phase of the Champions League next season.

Chermiti was backed by Rangers during the January transfer window, as they rejected a £13million bid from Fenerbahce, but the 22-year-old needs to show greater consistency if he is to retain his place in Danny Rohl’s team.

Youssef Chermiti faces Lawrence Shankland competition

Rohl is set to rebuild his Rangers squad this summer, and the German may have already have made his mind up about Chermiti after signing Shankland.

Chermiti arrived at Ibrox last summer in a deal worth more than £10m, but the signing of Shankland on a free looks to be smart business to bolster Rohl’s attacking ranks.

Youssef Chermiti and Lawrence Shankland Scottish Premiership 2025-26 stats compared.

In 2023-24, Shankland was the Scottish Premiership’s top scorer with 24 goals, and so he has pedigree in the competition.

Shankland will also provide much-needed leadership to the Rangers squad now that James Tavernier has departed, and the 30-year-old will not have moved to Glasgow just to sit on the bench.

Whilst Rohl has operated at times with two strikers up-front, the German has often started with only one centre-forward, meaning Shankland and Chermiti will be fighting it out for a place in the team.

Lawrence Shankland could force second Rangers departure

Shankland’s arrival at Ibrox will also not be good news for Bojan Miovski, who has struggled to make his mark since joining the club last summer.

Sources have told Football Insider that Miovski could force a departure from Rangers in order to find guaranteed game time elsewhere.

With Ryan Naderi also at the club, Miovski has become the fourth choice striker at Rangers, and is not expected to play a major part under Rohl next season.

The 26-year-old had a productive spell previously in Scotland with Aberdeen, but has only been able to find the back of the net 13 times in 42 appearances for Rangers in all competitions.
