Man United player ratings v Real Madrid: 24-year-old star has a 4/10 stinker
Goalkeeper and defenders
David de Gea 7 – Not at fault for either of the two goals, which were finished superbly. Made a smart save from Toni Kroos but didn’t have a whole lot else to do.
Antonio Valencia 6 – Decent performance from the captain and United looked better when he was getting forward but not his best game in a United shirt.
Victor Lindelof 6 – What a baptism of fire for the new recruit. As Mourinho himself said in the build-up to the game, this is a completely different level to the Portuguese Liga Nos. Mourinho might have wanted to break him in more gently but he didn’t look out of place, despite being schooled by Isco and Gareth Bale for the second goal.
Chris Smalling 7 – Put his body on the line again, making a great tackle against Gareth Bale in the first half and a fantastic block from Marcelo in the second.
Matteo Darmian 5 – A tough night for Darmian, who really won’t want to remember being absolutely done by Daniel Carvajal.
