Utterly directionless: Rangers senior duo to blame for farcical manager hunt

COMMENT

Rangers sacked Pedro Caixinha 54 days ago and handed control to Under-20’s head coach Graeme Murty on an interim basis while the club searched for Caixinha’s long-term successor.

Almost two months on though and it’s not the lack of leadership that’s the biggest problem for Rangers just now.

The senior duo of chairman Dave King and director of football Mark Allen appear not to have the first idea what they are doing as they bumble along and hope a manager falls into their lap.

When the decision was taken to sack Caixinha on October 26th was made – in what was the least surprising part of Rangers’ season so far – it shouldn’t have been too much to ask that the board and director of football at least had a rough idea of who they wanted to take the hotseat.

Instead, they released a statement almost two weeks after sacking Caixinha inviting applications before publicly criticising the calibre of candidates who applied.

Then there was Derek McInnes.

The Aberdeen boss was the bookies’ favourite to replace Caixinha from virtually the moment Caixinha was confirmed as manager back in March.

So what did Rangers do? Waited a month – including back-to-back games against Aberdeen which could have effectively ended the Light Blues’ season – before making a ham-fisted attempt to lure McInnes to Ibrox.

When that failed, the Allen and the Rangers board were right back to where they were when they made the call to sack Caixinha.

We’re now a few weeks on from the botched attempt to bring McInnes to Ibrox and the Gers look utterly directionless.

With Celtic on the way towards a seventh successive title, Rangers need to make sure they get this appointment right on the money but based on the previous 54 days, Gers fans should be seriously worried.
