Adam Wharton reacts as Sammie Szmodics shares devastating Ipswich injury update
Sammie Szmodics was absent in Ipswich’s FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest and has now provided fans with an update.
Ipswich suffered heartbreak in their most recent match after losing to Nottingham Forest on penalties in the FA Cup. Matz Sels emerged as the hero for Nottingham Forest in the shootout with his crucial saves.
Now, Kieran McKenna’s side must refocus on their battle for Premier League survival, sitting five points behind Wolves in 17th place as they face Crystal Palace on 8 March.
One noticeable absence from the squad in their cup defeat was Szmodics, who has only just returned from an ankle injury. After missing the match, the midfielder shared an update with fans about his current status.
Premier League position | Points |
17. Wolves | 22 |
18. Ipswich | 17 |
19. Leicester City | 17 |
20. Southampton | 9 |
Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton react as Sammie Szmodics confirms surgery
Szmodics has been dealt a major blow, confirming that he now requires surgery after his recent injury. The 29-year-old took to Instagram to share his disappointment, writing: “Gutted that my injury now needs surgery. Full focus on getting back fit. Thanks for the messages of support.”
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton showed his support by liking the post, as did teammates Ben Godfrey and Luke Woolfenden.
The forward has been a key figure since joining last summer, with Leeds fans previously pushing for the club to sign Szmodics before his eventual Premier League move.
He has made 22 appearances this season, scoring seven goals and providing two assists across all competitions. His extended absence will be a major setback for McKenna’s side.

Liam Delap must avoid transfer distractions as Ipswich fight relegation
With Szmodics now sidelined, McKenna will turn to Liam Delap to continue to provide firepower in the battle for survival. The young striker has been in strong form but remains the subject of ongoing transfer speculation, with Chelsea and Man United interested in Delap.
Amid Ipswich’s relegation fight, distractions are the last thing the club needs. They sit on 17 points, five adrift of Wolves, and have lost four of their last five Premier League matches. Every point is crucial at this stage, and attention now turns to a tough away trip against Crystal Palace.
