Agbonlahor can’t believe Chelsea could finalise £88m Joao Felix deal soon

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Chelsea can’t justify a £88million deal for Joao Felix after his mixed loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed there is a “reason” Atletico Madrid are keen to let the forward leave the club.

Felix’s loan spell at Chelsea has come to an end after the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign, with the 23-year-old scoring four goals in 20 Blues appearances.

According to the London Evening Standard (9 May), Chelsea have sounded out Atletico Madrid over a potential permanent move – with the Spanish side asking for a £88million fee.

The report claims Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marc Cucurella could be included in a possible swap deal for Felix.

Portugal star Felix has more than four years left to run on his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.

When asked if Chelsea should steer clear of a permanent deal for the forward, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “100%.

“When you’re talking about 100 million euros, he hasn’t done enough to justify that.

“He’s been on the bench a lot. He suits certain teams, but for that price – it just hasn’t worked.

“He’s had some nice touches, some nice goals – there’s a good player in there. But Chelsea just can’t pay that much.

“It’s too much. There’s a reason why Atletico Madrid don’t want him any more.

“He hasn’t performed to the levels they want, and he hasn’t done much better at Chelsea.”
