Agbonlahor can’t believe West Ham could appoint Graham Potter amid ‘surprise’ claim

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed West Ham should steer clear of appointing Graham Potter in the summer window.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested David Moyes could be given another chance to turn fortunes around if the Irons stay up this season.

Potter was sacked by Chelsea earlier this month (2 April) with the Blues cut massively adrift of the race for European qualification.

Sources have since told Football Insider (8 April) that the former Brighton boss has since been approached by Leicester – but he is not ready to take a new job until the summer.

West Ham are still locked in the fight against the drop despite their win over Fulham on Saturday (8 April) – and sit just three points above the relegation zone.

Manager Moyes has been under pressure throughout the 2022-23 campaign and is out of contract in June 2024.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I feel that him getting sacked by Chelsea might make him take a longer rest than usual.

“I think he could do with waiting until October or November, and seeing if a better job comes up.

“I don’t think he’d be interested in going to West Ham in the summer.

“And what does it say for them? To bring in a manager who was sacked by your London rivals.

“There are managers all around the world they can go for.

“It also wouldn’t surprise me if David Moyes stayed. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him given until October to turn this ship around – if they stay in the Premier League.”

Football Insider has also revealed (8 April) that Potter has set his sights on becoming the next manager of Southampton if they can pull off an unlikely great escape in the battle against relegation.

He has won 41 (~29%) of his 141 games in Premier League management.
