Agbonlahor: Celtic handed ‘great’ Howe boost after Romano reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Eddie Howe will end up as the new Celtic manager rather than Roy Hodgson’s successor at Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker admitted he thought Hodgson, 73, had another season left in him at Selhurst Park.

As revealed by Football Insider in April, Howe was part of a three-man shortlist at Crystal Palace, alongside Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche, as they prepared for life after Hodgson.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reports the London club are progressing in talks with Lampard.

The 42-year-old has been out of work since leaving Chelsea earlier this year.

Howe reached a verbal agreement with Celtic at the beginning of April but subsequently had second thoughts.

Asked whether Lampard potentially taking over at Selhurst Park could push Howe further to Parkhead, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think so. It would be great for Celtic if Lampard gets the Palace job.

“Roy Hodgson has just beaten Aston Villa and they’re midtable. I thought he might have another year left in him.

“I thought he might not have wanted to pull the plug when he could have still got some good results for Palace.

“That one didn’t seem as definite as Eddie Howe to the Celtic job.”

Crystal Palace manager

Hodgson will end his reign at Palace next weekend after almost four years in charge of his boyhood club.

He told the Palace website: “I have really enjoyed my time at Palace, I have been privileged to work with an outstanding group of professional and dedicated players, most of whom have been with me throughout the four years.”

In other news, 19 of the 20 Premier League sides are jealous of Celtic after a big development.
