Agbonlahor issues claim on Tottenham signing Hugo Lloris upgrade as transfer mission revealed

Sam Johnstone will find it difficult to oust Hugo Lloris and become the first-choice goalkeeper for Tottenham if he completes a summer move.

That is the view of ex-England international Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about his former Aston Villa teammate ahead of the summer transfer window.

A recruitment source told Football Insider on Sunday (3 April) that Spurs scouts were set to watch the 29-year-old in action in West Brom’s 1-0 loss to local rivals Birmingham City.

Johnstone will be a free agent in the summer and is a target for a number of Premier League clubs.

As revealed by Football Insider last month, Tottenham have no plans to convert Pierluigi Gollini’s loan into a permanent deal so will be in the market for a new back up goalkeeper.

Lloris has not missed a Premier League game in over two years and has been club captain since August 2015.

“Sam Johnstone is a very good goalkeeper, he’s proven that by breaking into the England squad and making his debut,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But I still think that it will be hard to get Lloris out of the side. He’s been an ever-present in that side for a few years. He makes a lot of good saves and is captain as well. You can’t see him losing his place, to be honest.

“He’ll make some good saves but then he will make some rubbish saves and can be caught on the ball.”

Johnstone kept six clean sheets in 37 Premier League games last season as West Brom suffered relegation.

He made his England debut in June 2021 and now has three caps to his name.
