Agbonlahor: John McGinn may be stripped of Aston Villa captaincy after confirmed news

Unai Emery may decide to take the Aston Villa captaincy away from John McGinn, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer suggested McGinn’s recent downturn form is due to the pressures of wearing the armband.

The 27-year-old was appointed team captain in the summer by Steven Gerrard after he stripped Tyrone Mings of the role.

However, McGinn has failed to perform this season and interim manager Aaron Danks dropped him to the bench, along with Jacob Ramsey, for the 4-0 win over Brentford on Sunday (23 October).

The club confirmed on Monday (24 October) that Emery had been appointed as Gerrard’s successor and Agbonlahor has suggested he may make a key decision on McGinn.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “First of all, Jacob Ramsey has been unbelievable.

“Since he broke into the team he’s been outstanding. Sometimes you can need to be brought out of the team and put back in.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he started the next game because I think he’s an outstanding talent.

“At that age, sometimes, you are not starting every game and you need to be taken out and brought back in.

“It’s the same with John McGinn. He’s played a lot of games, maybe he’s not been playing at his best.

“A lot of it as well is, since the armband was given to him. Maybe the reaction from fans about that has put a bit more pressure on him.

“Unai Emery could come in now and choose his captain and John McGinn could be back in the side playing his best stuff.

“Let’s be honest, Aston Villa are a better team when John McGinn is on form and playing.”
