Agbonlahor: Newcastle United tipped to sign Kieran Trippier upgrade after confirmed transfer news

Newcastle United can challenge for the top four if they sign “two or three top players” in January, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested Newcastle could target a centre-midfielder and a right-back to replace Kieran Trippier.

The Magpies currently occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot after their 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday (23 October) extended their unbeaten run to seven Premier League games.

As quoted by Chronicle Live last week (21 October), Eddie Howe insisted the January window will be “very different” to the club’s last two as they look to “taper” their spending.

“The reason why I do think they have a chance of making the top four is that there are not a lot of games before January because of the World Cup,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“I look at Newcastle and they have got the money to go again. They can go and bring in another centre-midfielder, another right-back. Whatever they feel they need to strengthen, they can go again in January.

“When you’ve got owners as rich as Newcastle’s with how well they are doing, players will join now. They will think ‘This is a project that’s going somewhere’.

“You’re going to get paid very well, they’ve got a very good squad of players and they are looking to push for Europe.

“If I was a betting man, I’d bet on Newcastle to finish in the top-six. The top four might be too soon because I still think Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool will finish ahead of them.

“If Newcastle can bring in two or three top players in January, then the battle is on. They drew with Man United away from home and beat Spurs away from home. They are going toe-to-toe with the top teams.”
