Agbonlahor on Eddie Howe potentially quitting Newcastle United as source reveals talks scheduled

There is “no chance” Eddie Howe would quit Newcastle United to take over as England manager, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker urged Gareth Southgate to stay on as Three Lions boss until at the least the European Championship in 2024.

Sources told Football Insider on Thursday (15 December) that Southgate will take the next few weeks to deliberate his position before holding talks with FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott.

It is understood that both want the 52-year-old to stay in his post with his contract set to expire in December 2024.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week (11 December) that Howe would be a “leading contender” to replace him but his situation at Newcastle makes a move unlikely.

“I would keep him and if I was him, I’d stay on,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s built something very strong there.

“England were the better team against France so there’s no shame with how England went out.

“I would stay for the Euros, I wouldn’t look beyond that. I’d see how close they can go in the Euros.

“For me, he’s done a great job. The players trust him and there was no problems during the tournament.

“I’d stick with Southgate and tell him to stay.

“Most of the squad will be the same for the Euros and there will be up-and-coming stars as well.

“It’s very difficult to talk about Eddie Howe. When club managers have got a safe job and a good job, they won’t leave it for an international job.

“I think there’s no chance of getting Eddie Howe.

“Managing your country is not for everyone.”
