Agbonlahor shares verdict on Tottenham ‘collapse’ amid update on Ryan Mason appointment

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Tottenham won’t “collapse” in the race for a top-four finish even if they hand Ryan Mason a caretaker role until the end of the season.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed appointing the 31-year-old is far and away a better option than keeping Antonio Conte in the role.

This site revealed on Sunday (19 March) that Tottenham are considering appointing Mason until the end of the season as Conte’s reign at the club comes to an end.

Football Insider updated on Friday (24 March) to reveal that sacked Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann is the first choice of chairman Daniel Levy to take over in the long term.

Mason is respected in the dressing room and has long been regarded by the club as a future Spurs manager after a previous caretaker role in 2020.

Tottenham remain in the box seat for Champions League qualification this term despite having played more games than their direct rivals.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Ryan Mason would get a better level out of the players than Conte would have.

“It’s a better option than keeping Conte.

“If the right person isn’t out there, they’ve got no choice.

“Levy obviously feels Conte can’t stay, the players are fuming. Mason is someone who can come in and steady the ship.

“He knows the club and can settle things down, and then they can look at it again when the season finishes.”
