Agbonlahor: Wolves told to U-turn on Neves transfer plan after Athletic update
Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Wolves to not sell Ruben Neves this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker suggested the Midlands club should cash in on Adama Traore instead to raise transfer funds.
The Athletic reported on 25th May that Wolves plan on selling Neves for a £35million fee this summer to help fund a rebuild.
The midfielder featured in 36 Premier League games this season and captained the side on occasion.
He joined the club in 2017 and played a key role in their rise from the Championship to the Europa League quarter-final.
The 24-year-old’s current contract expires in 2023 and he represents one of Wolves’ biggest assets alongside Traore.
Football Insider revealed on April 17 that former manager Nuno Espirito Santo had identified the Spanish winger as a saleable asset who could part-fund a summer spending spree.
And Agbonlahor has insisted the club should stick with their original plan.
Asked whether Wolves should sell Neves this summer, he told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitey: “I wouldn’t, to be honest.
“He’s been one of their best players in recent years. I’d keep him and maybe sell Traore because he’s been so hot and cold and you could generate some good cash from him.
“I don’t think Neves should be the one sold, at all.”
Nuno departed the club at the end of the season after over four years in charge and he is now set for talks today (June 4) with Everton over becoming their new manager.
Football Insider understands, as of June 2, that Wolves are confident Bruno Lage will be granted a work permit which will allow him to become their new boss.
In other news, Wolves are in pole position to sign a Jorge Mendes client after talks get underway.
